Re: [RC] trivia and 100 Mile - Kahlil - Joe LongOn Mon, 12 May 2003 17:23:48 -0400, Stagg_Newman@xxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: Joe, Awesome that Kahlil did 42 hundreds with a win and BC at age of 18. How big was Kahlil? My memory from seeing him at the '88 ROC is that he was another of the small powerful and very sound Arabs? Is that right? Kahlil is between 14.1 and 14.2. In full fitness when we were campaigning I weighed him on a cotton scale, at 820 pounds. A little guy, but deep through the heart. Barbara Rogers once called him "tough as an old pine cobb." That about summed it up. Matthew Mackay-Smith and I were riding together on the Old Domion one year. Kahlil had to keep breaking into a trot to keep up with the other horses in our group as we were going up a long climb. I mentioned his slow walk. Later, he was cantering while those around us were trotting, and I commented on that. Still later, I mentioned that he didn't have a really fast sprint at the finish line, we usually had to "win our race" out on the trail, pull away before the last mile. At that point I said, "You know, I guess he doesn't have ANY fast gait." Matthew said "Yes, but he can do it all day long." That summed it up pretty well, too. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
