Re: [RC] [RC] trivia/100/Biltmore - Char & JeffHi I always get off & walk into a vet check at least a few 100 yards away, I think it helps alot. Most times, even when racing, I can pretty much meet my crew at the in timer & keep walking toward the PR people while my crew is stipping tack & washing Zus down. By the time we get there he's usually ready or within a minute or two is down. Its amazing how much time you can make up on the people that come zooming into the gate/holds. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laurie Durgin" <ladurgin@xxxxxxx> To: <Stagg_Newman@xxxxxxxxxxxx>; <rides2far@xxxxxxxx>; <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, May 12, 2003 8:00 PM Subject: Re: [RC] [RC] trivia/100/Biltmore Speaking of slowing down, what percentage of riders, get off, loosen their tack and walk, oh, say the last 1/2 mile? Wondering ,since I do it in all my training rides, to hopefully teach him to relax and slow his heart rate. And do most ride managers mark some distance before the vet check as a signal to the riders? At Talladeaga they did ," vet check ahead ,so much distance."And / or would feeding him some hay/goodies be good at that time for gut sounds>I am hoping to walk in and go right to VC.(on my sloooow first ride. Please do not tell him he is only 14h 1. Hoping somebody who had all the Biltmore results would post as I did not write them down and I have a true knack for getting names and facts wrong. And yes, fortune smiled and Jayel Super won and got BC at Biltmore. When he is good ... and when he is bad well let's not go into that. We did not exactly blitz the course finishing in 14 hours and change. Ride was tough with mud, heat, and humidity! Results I remember below are for AERC 100. This was held in conjunction with FEI 100, and IAHA Region 12 Championship. 1. Stagg on Jayel Super (BC) 2. Darolyn Butler 3. Doug Sanders (sp?) 4. Meg Sleeper 5. Dinah Rojek 6. Mary Kornwolf ... 10. Doc. Ann Stuart on Ballyhoo wearing his bright PJs. ...... 24 finishers out of about 60 starters so completion rate well under 50%. Like often happens in 100s, many of the early front runners did not finish. I was probably about 15th into the first check point. We need to keep teaching people to "save horse". So will share a "secret" with others on ride camp. Ride a bit more slowly early on when the horses are excited and pass people in the holds with good recoveries. At the early holds the leaders were taking 8 to 13 minutes to recover and Super was recovering in 2 minutes. So what they gained on the trail they gave back at the holds. That makes a big difference later in the day in a tough ride. And btw significantly reduces the risk of the horse getting pulled, needing treatment, etc. Ann Ayala of course did a great job to pull the ride off given the rains, downed trees, swollen creeks, etc. Much praise to Ann.
