Re: [RC] Crossing Water - Rides 2 FarWell, Mr. gelding did a major tap dance when was asked to go across. So got off and asked but the response was quite the same as from the saddle. When I was 15 I was starting my first horse from scratch. Of course the day after she turned two I headed out across country and got to a creek which she totally refused to cross. We fought for awhile and I was getting nowhere. I didn't have Parelli, but I'd had a pony before and decided to use some psychology. I turned around and had to ride her on about 2 miles of road to get to the same spot on the other side of that creek. I was now on the far side from home and the creek stood between her and getting home. She took about 60 seconds to decide she could cross it just fine. Once they learn to cross headed towards home, heading away isn't such a big deal any more. It also helps to have them hot and thirsty when you get there. Water looks more like a friend to them then. I prefer to start on wider creeks that they don't even have to *consider* jumping.
