Re: [RC] [RC] EnduraMax vs. Summer Games Electrolytes - Susan GarlinghouseHi April, my understanding for the concern in a calcium/phosphoruos ratio is that there is enough calcium and not too much phosphorous. If the phosphorous is higher in the ratio then the Ca:Ph ratio is out of balance. Yup. What I learned was 1.5:1 ratio , or generally, the calcium be higher than the Ph. If your worried that this will be too much Ca for the ratio, feed a little wheat bran as it is generally acknowldged to be high in Ph. Nope. Don't worry about the phosphorus in an elyte mix, it is a NON-ISSUE. In general, as long as there is sufficient phosphorus total (about 15 g per day at maintenance, about 29-30 g per day at hard work), don't worry about a high calcium-phosphorus ratio (ie, 4 to 1, etc) and don't try to "balance" it by adding more phosphorus. You're not correcting any potential problems and potentially creating more problems. If the ca-p ratio of the TOTAL ration (not just individual bits like the elyte mix) with excessive calcium, then you should bring it into balance by lowering the calcium, not raising the phosphorus. Furthermore, this applies to the day-to-day ratio---I'm perfectly happy with high calcium ratios *during* the ride. Susan G Here is a quote from the KER website: Calcium and phosphorus are vital to formulating equine diets, and because they are interrelated, they are generally considered together. These two macro-minerals comprise most of the mineral matter in the horse's body. The challenge for horse owners and managers is twofold: 1) to make sure the horse receives adequate quantities of calcium and phosphorus, and 2) to ensure the proper ratio between these two minerals. When phosphorus exceeds calcium in the total ration, the phosphorus will interfere with the absorption of the calcium and serious orthopedic disease can result.
