RE: [RC] Teeny Weeny Budget - Rebecca HackworthOK, if you are truly on a tight budget.....what saddle pad do you use now? USE THAT ONE! What bridle do you use to ride in now? USE THAT ONE ! Bum a ride, and pay for most or all of the gas. If it isn't far, it will be far less that the trailer rental for the weekend! Get your horse used to tying to a trailer before going to the ride. If you have a helmet use that, if you don't yes, invest in lightweight and comfortable. They can be had on sale for about $39 You can ride in tights from Wal-Mart (in the ladies undergarment / sports underwear section ) Minor seam, but for your first LD, would work fine. Do training rides in them to see. $15 Pack a halter to the Vet Checks. Only drop off the bridle for an hour hold. Anything shorter gets confusing.... $0 Do you ride without your cavesson noseband? Ride in what works for your horse. Learn how to take a pulse with your fingers. You can do this at the jugular or on the lower leg. If you must have a stethoscope, don't spend more than $10, The more expensive, the quicker they get lost... EZ Boots are best when you are doing LOTS of miles on very hard or rocky ground. To get started in LD, just standard foot care. I don't want to get into the debate of shoes or not.....PLEASE....My horses erase their feet on the hard trails out here in the West, so I shoe. Horses not being competed are left barefoot. This is my sort of budget. Hope it helps. This is not to say you won't WANT all of the things you have listed, but need??? NO. Just do it.
