My problem is the sand embedded into the hard pack snow/ice on country roads.
It shaves off the hooves like a rasp (he didn't need a trim all last winter). I
used Easy Boots with studs when the wear became too great but had trouble
keeping them on. 

I assume your ICE comment would include the road situation:(
