Re: [RC] Fat or Carbs - Maggie MieskeI have to feed our stallion extra fat (sometimes up to 3 cups a day) in order to maintain him in good condition. I think it does make a difference at rides...after he burns up all the glycogen from his grain and hay, he still has that reserve. I was amazed at how much gas he had last year and am not going to mess with success. Of course, you DON'T feed fat just before or during a ride... slows gastric emptying which we do NOT want. I resume it a day or so after we get home. I find that beet pulp slurries with a little bit of grain, apples, carrots, etc. and whatever he feels like grabbing along the trail (grass, weeds, leaves sometimes) is all the "carbo loading" we need to do. I'm not up to messing with what so far has been working for us. Hope this helps.
