Re: [RC] RE:Body questions - Stephanie E Caldwell

I, too, am hypoglycemic and have ulcers. I've yet to compete, but have been
having some pretty severe problems training as the weather has changed. I
usually stay out from 3 - 5 hours 2 - 3 times a week.

Human electrolytes are as bad on stomachs as equine electrolytes, I either
combine my Gatorade with a few Tums or stay away from it all together,
although I get mild cramping and minor dehydration with the Tums/Gatorade
mix. I find that V-8 juice is just about the best thing for me, not too many
sugars and it keeps me from cramping. I also drink tons of water. Campbell's
new Soup to Go is wonderful for a boost on the trail without alot of sugars,
with the heat around here it stays moderatly warm in my saddle bags!

I am hypoglyemic and really have to avoid foods with a high glycemic
index -
which means all carbs and many fruits. Back in my 20s when I was a
hard-core triathlete I discovered that Gatorade wreaked havoc with my
body -
the only way I could drink it is if once I started, I couldn't stop (I
couldn't go 1/2 hr between drinks) or I'd get a huge drop in blood sugar
and
could hardly even think.

These days I eat alot of protein - protein bars and drinks work well for
me
at rides, and I always drink alot of water!

Oatmeal has a fairly high glycemic index - meaning it causes a sugar
spike
and subsequent drop. I used to eat oatmeal too in the AM till my crew
made
me stop :)

When I was at the convention listening to Susan talk about carbohydrates
and how we don't want them to do the spike/crash scenario I remember
thinking...too bad we can't just feed our horses some cheese and meat :)
