Thanks for that site! I'm a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and give sometimes
20 injections a day, including some really difficult patients with no veins,
but it is much more difficult for me to feel confident about doing an
injection on a horse.
I used to feel fine about it, but my mare had a horrible infection three
years ago and had to get Naxcel injections for a prolonged time. She was
great about needles until that, but 10 or 20CC's of that stuff did her in.
It burned and she hated it. We ran out of areas, the top of the rump was the
worst. Broke my heart to have to twitch and lip chain a mare that held her
badly injured and infected leg up for treatment with no objection. Now she
moderately objects to needles. My other new mare, also from the AHRN-so I
don't know her whole history-is very needle adverse. Last time I had the vet
here for vaccinations and teeth, we finally elected to sedate her before the
vaccinations since we had to tranq her for the float anyway. She was that
bad. She is obviously scared and not just aggressive, but could have easily
been dangerous out of her fear. Do I try to do their vaccinations at home
with my friends who is the vet's assistant? Or bite the considerably big
bullet of getting the vet out? Mare number one is in need of a float as
well, but a vaccination visit would cost almost 200 bucks with all the
shots, WNV and a vet call. I live in SoCal and vet fees are exorbitant. Out
local riding club also have a shot clinic scheduled next month. One week
after I do the 50 at Hog wild. I would like to get these mares and myself to
a point where we can do these shots fairly trouble free. Any advice? To
improve the mare's behavior and my confidence? I can't be the only one
intimidated by this. I can be present in the OR and ER of some of the
biggest trauma centers around-I'm an x-ray tech as well-but animal sickness,
treatment and injuries bother me 20 times more than human.

Thanks, Tiffany
