[RC] FW: Hoax Autoreply - Mike SherrellI queried McAfee about McAfee about the following email, posted to ridecamp. Their response is at the bottom. I received this email today. Is there anything to it? (I'm a McAfee subscriber.) -------------- Hi I did find it on my computer so you need to check yours as well. Sorry Mary Anne From: "Katie Upton" <katieupton@xxxxxxx> To: <Undisclosed-Recipient:;> Subject: VIRUS ALERT Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 16:44:27 -0800 VIRUS ALERT I was told the teddy bear virus might be on my system, and following the instructions below, sure enough there it was. Please follow these instructions on your own systems...KatieSubj: IMPORTANT - VIRUS ALERT!!!!It was on my machine - A virus has been passed on to me by a contact. My address book WAS infected. Since you are in my address book, there is a good chance you will find it in your computer too. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent Emails to your contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it: 1. Go to Start, Find or search option 2. In the file'folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you search your C: drive and all sub-folders and any other drives you may have 4. Click "find now" 5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Go to Edit (on menu bar), choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it. 7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the Recycle Bin. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS. a) Open a new e-mail message b) Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO" c) Highlight every name and add to "BCC" d) Copy this message and paste to e-mail _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net. You can get tips for avoiding real malware at the AVERT Research website: http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/naicommon/avert/avert-research-center/anti-virus-ti ps.asp <http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/naicommon/avert/avert-research-center/anti-virus-t ips.asp> As rewording and combining of hoax messages is quite common, we post descriptions of new computer virus-related hoax messages only when details vary substantively from previous versions.
