Re: [RC] Spring shots - pectoral muscles - Heidi SmithCan I get more details on giving a shot in the pectoral muscles. I have never heard of this before and so have never done. Any particular way or place I should give the shot, or something that I should avoid, etc.? I go for the fleshiest part of the pec. There is a small blood vessel that goes through there, but if one hits it, one simply withdraws and moves over an inch. I have heard that butt shots can also be problematic because you could hit the sciatic nerve...anyone care to comment? Not a problem in adult horses, unless you're using a really LONG needle--couple of inches... This IS an issue in foals, and it is avoided by circling one's thumb and forefinger around the thigh to kind of push the muscle away from the bone with one hand while injecting with the other hand.
