[RC] spring shots and other injections - Jonni JewellAfter owning horses literally all my life, I personally won't give a shot in the neck. Just too many risks I have heard of over the years. As Heidi mentioned, if you get an infection, that needs to drain, they will do so better in other spots. I have had the vet do a shot on the front of the chest in the pectoral area. I was taught when I was about 10 to give shots up high on the butt. (my pony needed antibiotics daily) I had no idea just how tough that skin was, until the vet showed me that I could give them "high on the thigh" (right Heidi) The part of the butt that the tail hangs between <grin> Those muscles are easy to inject into, and the skin is SO much thinner than the top of the butt!!! And as mentioned, if there is an infection, they will drain easier. Thankfully, I have never had an infection at an injection sight. But have seen them......yuck! And this year, my one horse had a reaction to his 5 way shot...given by the vet, in the neck. Big bump, listless, moved slow and stiff. Next time, we are going to make some changes on the injection sites......vet giving shot or not, I really would prefer the neck be avoided if possible.
