Re: [RC] Jugging - casbeerI had a Shetland Pony that came from the equine program at a University, he was the guinea pig for the students to practice blood drawing on. He had permanent scarring, and the jugular had actually rolled and twisted with some other vein/artery that's right there also (explained to me by a vet, by I forgot the correct terms) It was not pretty, and will need to be pointed out to vets the rest of his life if he needs blood drawn or injections, since it would be easy to inject into the wrong one. I wouldn't hesitate to jug my horse if it was needed, but I'd be pretty upset with myself for allowing my horse to get to that level of dehydration. So, unless I have misunderstood the vets that I have spoken with (a possibility), there is no way in hell I am going to routinely administer IV fluids to my horse...just to be safe. Because the more often you do it, the more likely you are to end up with a horse that has a permanently blocked jugular vein (horses do have two of them, so it isn't the end of the world if one becomes blocked, but it certainly isn't something that I would aspire to:)). Question to the vets out there...just how likely is it that a jugular IV will permanently block the vein? And even if it doesn't permanently block the vein, what is the effect of any scarring (it seems to me that there will be at least a little scarring every time) that occurs. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
