Re: [RC] WNV - Jim SimpsonI can certainly relate to what everyone in the west is going through in the decision to vaccinate or not. One of the winter issues of Western Horseman published a map of reported cases as of November. The Minnesota of Public Health also tracked WNV very closely. We saw the first cases in July and by November has almost 1000 cases reported. They are guessing less than /2 were actually tested and reported. I'm not a vet, however The number reported seemed pretty accurate for what I saw and heard in the western part of our state. We made the decision early to vaccinate on our farm after sitting at the first race we went to in our season and the ride vet told me she didn't know if she was going to be able to save these horses. Things got pretty scary up here quickly last summer. The majority of our friends who had horses in MN and SD had horses become infected, some didn't make it. We watched our horses closely everyday hoping the vaccine worked. The vets in the area pulled out all the stops on treatment. Treatment is not by any means cheep and was very aggressive. Many people in our area waited until the virus was here before vaccinating then had a horrible wait for the immunity to kick in. Vaccinating is a choice between you and your vet. We are now on our second year of vaccinations with 8 horses. So far we have had absolutely no problems with the vaccine and no cases on our farm. If you have the opportunity to talk with a vet from an area that has been hit hard, do so. This is nothing to mess around with. It goes where the birds and mesquites are. Most of the horses that I know of that got it here were not traveling. I don't mean to hit the scare tactic however, in short last year was a very scary summer in the Midwest who had horses.
