If this horse has really thin soles, he may not be
able to go without at front shoes. I have a gelding like that.
Tried letting him go barefoot last winter and only rode him in an arena with
excellent footing. After six weeks he was lame, sore on both front
feet.

laurie, if this TB will be ridden as infrequently as you say, then
definitely let him go barefoot except when riding in the rocks.
