Re: [RC] Streatching picket lines - Glenda R. SnodgrassI've seen Trail ties (out side) that are stretchy, allowing your horse more freedom of movement with out loose rope dangling. I was wondering what the thought are on using these for picketing your horse at rides? You'd still use the same length I'd suspect, but if your horse stretched them they would go back to there original length? I made two picket sets that two friends are now using, seem to work well for several different horses for a couple of years now. For the tie that connects to the horse's halter, I used stretchy bungie-cord-type material connected to the overhead (yacht) rope with a sliding ring, and just long enough to reach about 2- 3" above the ground. I encased the bottom 3-4' of this tie in old rubber hose, so if the horse got his foot wrapped around it, only the rubber hose touched his skin and thus danger of rope burn was minimized. It worked very well at keeping the tie out of their faces and feedbuckets, and allowed them plenty of movement, and yes the one time one horse spooked and pulled back on the line, the line stretched and he was surprised and walked right back up to his regular spot, no problems whatsoever. The horses were always able to lie down and sleep comfortably too. My only concern has been that the rubber would degrade over time, so I recommend carefully checking the connections at each end before use, and perhaps replacing the tie once a year or so. -- Glenda R.
