Re: [RC] Does anyone know anything about the state of the Arabian horse in the War Zone`s - Maryanne Stroud GabbaniI don't know how much Iraq and Egypt are alike in terms of their dependence on horses for travel. My understanding is that the literacy rate is higher in Iraq than in Egypt and in many respects Iraq has been much more developed because it did have the oil income. I can tell you that if there were an invading army of tanks plowing through the Egyptian delta, you had best believe that the livestock would have a very hard time of it. The farm families would do everything they could to keep cattle, horses, goats, sheep, camels and so on together and safe because they provide the keep for the family. However, livestock are remarkably stupid when it comes to wandering into areas where they are not supposed to be. What I understand of the geography of Iraq is that it has very broad areas of desert interspersed with swampy river valleys. This kind of geography is not kind to refugees. If people try to flee with their animals, they will be seriously limited in terms of the places they can go, how they will feed them and where they will get water. I would imagine that war isn't much fun for the horses, camels, cows, sheep and so on. But then most of the bombing and such seems to be in urban areas, so hopefully the agricultural areas will be less affected. No one is having much fun there.Maryanne Cairo, Egypt.
