Re: [RC] The nutritional guide to lame babies - Heidi SmithI don't see the frequency in the lines from Europe and that includes Polish arab race lines and warmbloods. That is because they are stricter breeders from a quality standpoint. I must have missed that line--I've certainly seen "clubby" feet in just about every major subgroup of Arabians in this country--Polish, CMK, Egyptian, etc. My mare, with both fronts clubby, is the daughter of a Polish import stallion. There are a lot of reasons (genetic, nutritional, injuries) why horses develop club foot. But mainly, if you don't overfeed, your not AS LIKELY to get it in otherwise susceptible horses. I like Heidi's theory that there is a genetic predisposition to metabolize feeds well. In many cases, it is the efficient ones. It can also be ones that have a stricter requirement for the Ca:P ratio to be right, and/or ones that seem to have a higher need for selenium. Halter has also "selected" for "clubby" feet by selecting for lines that grow rapidly--just about any growth abnormality is exacerbated by rapid growth. I think that is why they are also so prevalent in some lines of QH's and APHA's. But again, they invariably occur in the individuals of those lines that are overfed.
