Re: [RC] The nutritional guide to lame babies - DESERTRYDR1Sorry to disagree with you, but I know at least two breeding farms where the stallions and mares did NOT have clubfoot, and most of the babies do, and it IS Nutrition related. On one farm they have had several unrelated stallions over the years, and most of the babies have a club foot, even though the original foundation mare did not. I know this for a fact, as I have seen their foundation stallions and mares. These people feed their babies way too much. I saw a baby that was born there get to be a weanling with absolutely no signs of a clubfoot, then they started pouring the food to her to fatten her up, pretty soon she was lame and clubfooted. There is a genetic component in some cases, but it is definitely nutrition related. My Arabian mare who is clubby in both fronts had a beautiful Anglo-arab baby (now 9) who has the most even and perfect angles on all four feet that my farrier has seen. Mom is from the farm with lots of club feet. I raised the baby myself, and she stayed a bit on the skinny side through her first year. Just enough that her spine was not covered by fat, but not enough to see ribs. jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
