Re: [RC] Nutritional deficiencies? - Jennifer Judkins

I'm definately NOT an expert.  But I have often wondered if the 'tendency' to feed alot of alfalfa to youngster in the west contributes to this.  Any experts out there?  Susan G.?  Jennifer.

Just a question for the vets and nutrition experts out there. Just recently
I have personally become aware of many riders and friends who have either
lost or lost the use of horses that they bought as foals from "bone "
problems. For example sidebone, djd, broken bones , etc. In all cases these
were horses bought as youngsters- 3 to 4 year olds from breeders, horses in
good condition, never been worked hard, in most cases not even backed. All
of these horses either broke legs after beginning light work or have had
intermittent lameness when the work load has been increased. When x-rayed
they show sidebone and chips in fetlock(on sesamoid) . this is becoming a
very worrying "trend" to me and I am thinking twice about buying youngsters
without x-raying all legs and feet first. But , could this be a nutritional
deficiency as babies? They do not come from the same breeder , or same areas
or even same bloodlines so can't find anything common in that. They do not
come from "Show" breeders as such so are not stable bound , all have had
turnout and what we considered a good natural young life. Is this calcium
deficiency, or too much protein or the wrong balance of rations ?
