Re: [RC] [RC] Wood/bark chewing - Laurie Durgin

I have a Tb who is a certified wood chewer. He had been starved a bit once before we got him, so that may have started it. But,we conclude he just likes to do it and it may be the sap or the fun of destroying trees, he has taught our other horses; and when at trainers barns he has taught other horses (at 3 barns )to eat tree bark. When we cut a tree down in their paddock they all gather around like vultures and strip the bark off.(they have hay 24/7) and we tried other stuff.I think they learn it ,like it and pass it on. AVarous vets, trainers etc. didn't have a clue. My gelding now grabs at twigs before brass sometimes on rides.

I've finally narrowed down who is chewing up the board fence and the bark
off the trees. It is the arabian mare. She gets grain, has free access to
hay and pasture and a mineral salt block.

Should I look into additional mineral/vitamin additives to her daily grain
ration? She has 3 companions so should not be bored, gets worked 3 - 4 x
per week.

I will be asking the vet when he comes out monday for their wnv boosters but
thought I'd ask you folks too.
