Re: [RC] Wood/bark chewing - Elaine DelbekeWe cut poplar trees every fall and spring and put them in for the horses to chew to save the standing trees. They have free choice hay, free choice salt, free choice minerals but they all prefer tree bark and small branches at a certain time in the spring and the fall. She has a couple of different grass hays in front of here 24/7, gets a very well-rounded vit/min supplement 2xday, has free choice access to a very tasty mineral mix that they all consume, has salt added to her grain, gets Se/E and she still goes for dirt like crazy and every form of wood other than the oak barn. She has a taste for these things and the other two have learned these irritating habits from her. I have tried three different mineral mixes. The only one they will really eat is a block that has mollasses and some grain meal in it. I also tried supplementing with Magnesium oxide. Even when out on green grass she will dig up sod to get to the dirt. Very destructive!!!!! Good thing my spouse's shotguns are locked up. Probably saved the lives of a few kids on ATVs also. It is the arabian mare. She gets grain, has free access to hay and pasture and a mineral salt block. Should I look into additional mineral/vitamin additives to her daily grain ration? She has 3 companions so should not be bored, gets worked 3 - 4 x per week. I will be asking the vet when he comes out monday for their wnv boosters but thought I'd ask you folks too. That is what attracts him. My horses are the same way. But as a friend found out, NEVER count on your horses willingness to voluntarily consume electrolytes. That's when they will turn their nose up at them. Plan on giving them what you have determined that they need based on conditions. If they will consume some of this mixed in a bucket of water great! But still know how much has gone into them and how much more you want in them. Have your dosing syringe handy. Today, after a fairly short ride (although we were working in plowed fields some of the time), I was messing around with my new guy and offered him some Perform N Win electrolytes in my hand. He licked them all up. I scooped up another palmful; he ate them all again. Another palmful; same deal. After three scoops from my hand, he nosed my hand out of the way and started eating them out of the bucket. This horse has free access to mineral salt and plain salt and this new Moorman's mineral block, but he was still just munching down on the Perform N Win. So, my question is, does he actually need these electrolytes if he's eating them? Or is it possible that he just likes the taste? Can I leave out "free choice" Perform N Win for him at the rides, or will he make himself sick?
