Re: [RC] Round pen dirt/base? - Bette LamoreGeez... and you're complaining about it? We have to pay through the nose for any sand, much less beach quality. That's what I prefer for round pens as I use them to train my horses---- a lot softer to fall down on ;-)Actually, as I use my pen for training purposes only (as most do, I believe), I don't ride the horses there for extended periods of time so I am not concerned about the deep sand effect over distance. It is certainly a lot better for them than hard surfaces--- so long as it is consistent and not hard in some places and soft in others (an invitation to suspensory problems). My favorite place to ride green horses is in the river bottom and along beaches. They tire themselves out easily and are not as prone to mischief from too much energy and if I do have to make a "quick dismount" it is not so hard on the bod! Our problem has never been that the dirt has gone down the sand, but that our expensive hauled in sand has either washed away in the rains or been submerged under harder ground and rocks coming up through it. Can you ship a little of your excess over here??? It would sure be an improvement over our adobe clay, which is like cement in summer and goose snot in winter! My understanding is that heavier material (clay, etc.) will eventually sift down through the sand and be gone. Does anyone have any ideas of what type of material I can use to get a good floor to my round pen?
