susan, we have a mare that for the past year has had a problem, often 
common in our wet winters but she didn't clean up last summer like she 
should have.  the vet prescribed a daily treatment with 50-50 formalin and 
7% iodine.  have to be careful not to get this on cornet band or your 
skin.  the formalin/formaldahyde needed a prescription.  it has done a 
great job for her after the usual cure around here called thrush buster 
didn't do it for her.

what we did during this winter was to stall her on shavings during the wet 
times, don't let her out when it is muddy or there is standing water in her 
turnout, pick her feet really well and brush them out daily.  i've had to 
do a little trimming on the frog center to keep it open in between farrier 
visits.  keeping the feet dry and clean is important.

one farrier told me it is caused by them standing in urine hole, another 
said no, it's the manuer.  for her either one could be it because she's a 
'dirty' horse in that she pulverizes her mauer and does walk a lot through 
her pee spot.   maybe susan has an opinion on which it is. the farrier 
wasn't a lot of help to us which is why we called in the vet.
