For those of you who
> breed, what 
> are the pluses and minuses?  What do you 'get out of it'?

 Believe it or not some of us do make money breeding mares
and selling the foals ...BUT you have to know what sells,
where the demand is, what bloodlines are in vogue (with
just the mention of which puts dollar signs in peoples
eyes) and what nicks well with these popular bloodlines.
Then you have to have a plan for marketing your "product"
when it arrives as well as a worse case scenerio plan of
what you will do with the foal if for what ever reason that
stud and that mare just didn't click and you can't sell it.
In the past I've usually had my foals sold before they are
even born. People who are successful have spent years
researching. Seldom do you see someone who on a whim
thought it would be fun to have a few mares to breed, that
are financially successful and stay in the black.
  If you want a baby, do yourself a favor and buy a
weanling from a successful breeder in your chosen breed and
riding dicipline. You will probably get a nicer foal that
was specifiaclly bred for what you plan to use it for, then
if you bred your own mare and be much happier in the long
run!
