[RC] training horses to drink - Andrea Day

I've had good luck with "training" horses to drink by salting them at the morning feed, then getting them thirsty with a ten mile ride in the heat of mid-day, then bringing them back to the home tank, getting off and dabbling with the tips of my fingers in the tank. (do it far enough away from where they'll stick their noses so they don't get bugged) Then every time I find a water source, I get off and splash a little bit. The sound of the water, plus the getting off, makes them think more about drinking. It becomes a conditioned response after a while--sort of like whistling to make a racehorse pee.

Of course this has worked with a lot of horses, but NOT with my favorite ding-dong!
