I I put down a cow yesterday with a captive bolt (same as a bullet, just safer) and yes, it was a very humane death for her. And yes, respectful as well. It always seemed to me that if horses could discuss the matter, they would be very happy with this end. Euthanasia solution IV just isn't always feasible for a myriad of reasons totally aside from finances. My choice has always been to provide the most painless and safe death I can for my animals, send the body for disposal, and send the money I might have spent for a backhoe or cremation to an appropriate animal charity. The only animal I ever cremated was my beloved dog Solo---and even he has a bench in the gardens at the CSU vet hospital donated in his name. I think he would have preferred that. Anyway, it seems to me that respect has a lot of different definitions. If you're happy eating ramen noodles, then at least consider whether the end result is for the sake of an animal or just to make yourself feel better. :-) JMO.
