Re: [RC] [RC] Inflammed Coffin Joint - DIANE L KNAPPER

    Pat,
I guess I should've clarified that. For me, competiting is a 25 mile competitive distance. He has never been or never will be a 50 miler, nor will I...I like 25 miles.

I don't want to do anything that will premantely injure him. I know that is an inherent risk in this sport and I accept that. This guy will never be for sale and if he can't continue to compete, he will be a trail horse and/or team sorting/penning horse as long as he is able to do it. My primary goal for this upcoming season is to have him conditioned enough to lead novice rides and to stay sound. He offers a lot to the novice rides, nothing bothers him on the trail, he is mister steady eddy and is great at calming young nervous horses and riders.

I however, want to do that competitive distance ride again! Especially on this guy, he is a joy to go down the trail with.

I'm wondering is this is a one time abberation or if I'm going to have to worry about the inflammed coffin joint for the rest of his life. I've talked to everyone in our local club and no one has come up against this. I was hoping by going nationwide with my problem, someone may have had the same problem.

I am not sure what you mean when you say "competing him". If he were my
horse, I would go out for a few slow 50's. If he handles the first one with
no problems, I would still try a couple of slow to moderate ones. Based on
what he tells you during these, you may then consider working up to
    "compete".
    Best of luck...
    Pat
