[RC] Inflammed Coffin Joint - DIANE L KNAPPER

I'm curious if any of you have had this problem and how your horse recovered from it.

May/June of 2002, my 14 yr old, 1/2 arab came up sore at 2 out of 3 rides. The 3rd ride he was head bobbing lame on hard surfaces. At that point I decided no more competition and just to give him some time off. We did some light trail riding throughout the rest of June and July. He showed no signs of being off during that time. In the beginning of August, I went out to the pasture to get him and he was lame at the walk. He was at the vet's the next day and was grade 4-5 lame in the left front. After doing the nerve blocks and x-rays it was determined that he had an inflammed coffin joint and no signs of navicular. He was given legend and another shot, stall rest for 48 hours and instructions to start riding light riding in a week. All of that advice was followed and he recovered. Based on several circumstances, the real light riding continued until Nov/Dec when I started to use him for team sorting. He has remained sound for this activity.

I guess my real question is, has anyone went through this and brought their horse back to competition level? I'm a little leary of competiting him again next year, I certainly don't want to have to go through this again. Cause of the problem, never determined...he had no injuries. Thanks for your input.
