[RC] Leg conformation & Heart - rides2far
<< uys talk a little about "heart' ...what is it you see? It seems
there are lots of horses who just want to run...but is heart more than this?
My horse may not be the fastest or the "best" but I think he's Hall of Fame in "heart". I think heart is a horse that gives you everything he's physically capable of and tries to give you more than that. When a bigger, stronger or faster horse comes by he reaches a little deeper and lengthens his stride to match it. When he's tired he still has a DRIVE to go forward. No matter how many times you put the saddle *back* on he is eager to meet the challenge. He understands the game and he wants to win it. A horse with a lot of heart is a big responsibility because they are willing to give too much.
At Biltmore 100 a couple of years ago I was supposed to leave the last vet check with Valarie Kanavey. I did not think my horse *needed* to do the last 20 miles with her so I didn't leave as she left, but was at the out timer when she left. My horse had been 80 tough miles but he pranced and pulled to go with them when they left. That's heart.
A horse with great athletic ability with heart is a prize. A horse with "good athletic ability with heart is a responsibility.
As to the wearing of shoes. I haven't had a horse who wore his front shoes first since I switched to endurance. My horse pushes off big from the rear and wears the outside rear shoes paper thin while the front shoes still look new. Kaboot's got a pretty long back and is a tad rump high but he's like a speedboat...when he hits cruising speed the rear end lowers and spreads out and he's dead level.
