Well Laura, some of us don't have a choice. I live in So Cal and if you
can't ride near traffic, you won't ever ride. Period. Horses get used to it
fast. They have to. I take new horses out with old hands and let them get
used to it. We have bridle trails along side busy roads separated by white
fencing. There is some measure of safety with that. Literally-you HAVE to be
able to ride in traffic here. At least all the dogs are fenced. The few that
aren't are easily scared off by charging at them as are coyotes.
Some of us don't live in rural areas. So Cal is all suburban with very few
wide open areas-to get to them I still have to ride in or by traffic.
