Re: [RC] Ride shortages: - Nancy Mitts
Okay,
Some people want advice, others just want to stir the pot.
The reality of life is that there are few places to hold distance riding
competitions of ANY distance (even 25) in the backyards of high population
areas. AERC can't change that.
What makes you think that those competitive, experienced, horse people would
flock to a 25 mile ride just because it's in their back yard?
People participate in activities they LIKE. Whether it be jumping, eventing,
dressage, pony club, breed showing, trail riding or distance competitions.
They will willingly drive past one such event in order to get to the one of
their choosing. Location of the event is rarely the prime consideration.
And what would a 25 mile only ride teach them about the wide range of
endurance experiences possible? I can't see how it would do anything but
contribute to the factionization of the sport, and that's really sad.
AERC HAS increased advertising in wide-interest horse publications. Ride
managers TRY to get local groups interested in their events.
If you are sincere in increasing awareness of endurance in your area, a
clinic is still your best bet. If you are unwilling to work with the
existing groups nearest you, it might not be easy. Be prepared to pay your
vet and at least the expenses of your other speakers. You'll need to offer
refreshments and have plenty of printed materials people can take with them.
Good Luck.
