Re: [RC] HighLining, Tree Savers, Knot Eliminators, and Rope - Ed and Wendy Hauser
"Rope: I have used nylon but now I prefer yacht rope. After reading the
post about the rope that stretched in the rain I am wondering if yacht rope
would stretch if it got soaked. Seems like rope used for boating would not
stretch. Can anyone confirm this?"
None of the synthetic fibers are particularly susceptable to stretching in
wet. Available syntheticrope fibers are:
Nylon. Very strong. has quite a bit of elasticity. For this reason it is
used for anchor lines on boats. Because of the stretch it will store a lot
of energy when a horse pulls back. If it or an attachment breaks, the end
will snap back with great force. I do not recommend for horses. Slick and
a bit hard to tie.
Polyester: Very strong. sold for running rigging on yachts. minimal
streatch. good in the sun light. quite expensive. Harder to find inland.
Polypropylene (olefin) low cost. very available, low stretch. OK in the
sunlight if good quality. Available in both twist and braid. My rope of
choice. I recommend 5/8 inch twist for highlines.
Polyethylene: very low cost. I've only seen it in very cheap poor quality
rope. Slick and hard to knot. I don't recommend for any serious uses.
