I had some pretty tough trainers when I was
younger. I had over 10 years of hunt seat/dressage lessons and I had one insane
(but smart) trainer who would work to the right for about 2 weeks when she
saw most of us favored our left sides. She took off our stirrups for 2 weeks and
made us work like that for what seemed like "forever!" When that was over it
seemed weird to go to the left and our horses seemed much better going to right
than before. It improved their flexibility also. It really made them seem more
even for a long time after that. So now in in the ring I work 60% to right,
and 40% to left since my horse seems to favor left. It has made him more even
and I have found he now goes on left or right lead evenly. I also favor my left
diagonal but "force" myself to go on right diagonal 50% of time when on training
rides.
