Re: [RC] websites for Cushings? - Jon . Linderman

    Rhonda,

    try the following:
    http://www.io.com/~lolawson/cushings/

Though I abhor testimonials I will none the less give you my own. We have
a 31 year old arab gelding who is cushinoid. No one who sees him believes
that at 25 we thought his days were nearly over. Today he has great muscle
tone, highly active, rideable, and seems to be very very healthy. Through
many trial and error efforts we found that:
    a) pergolyde was far superior, for us, that cyproheptadine in treating his
symptoms. IN fact we wondered if perhaps it had "ungelded him" since he
became so very robust, stronger, more active, etc.
    b) an equine senior food was essential, we use Purina equine senior which
is a hay based complete feed. He has very ample turnout 24/7/365.
    c) we body clip his very long coat from April through October, since he
does not seem to thermoregulate well in the heat. Thus far this year he
has been body clipped 4 times & each time he seems so very relieved and we
see an immediate increase in his activity level.
    d) proper hoof care since a cushionoid horse is more susceptible to
founder. Sorry barefoot people, but we we shoe him in front w/natural
baslance shoes to ease breakover. Hoof growth in many cushionoids is very
rapid and a fairrer may be need every 4 weeks or more to keep him from
gettting out of shape in front and back.
    e) dental care. The older cushionoid horses need their food and bad teeth
can be a problem. We've had to have 2 pulled, but otherwisde he eats and
    chewds very well.

It is truely a joy to see my wife's prized 4H pony from her childhood
trotting around the property with our 11 year-old daughter aboard. The old
fart is very active and very healthy after being 1-2 hooves in the grave at
about 25 before we got as much advice and help w/him. The treatment and
maintenace are expensive, and some might question the expense for a horse
that can no longer be shown/competed at anything above a recreational
elevcel, but speaking from experience its alot chepaer than divorce court!

My mare has been having an ongoing problem with excessive urination. Her
latest blood tests show a significantly increased insulin level. Does
    anyone
know of a good web site or sites that explain about pre-Cushings, Cushing
    and/or diabetes in horses?
