[RC] Drugs and sheath stitching - CMNewell
Unless I'm mistaken, I suspect the sheath story is a mutation of something
that happened a few Nationals ago.
A certain trainer was giving ever so small amounts of detomidine
(Dormosedan) to his entries, in the hope that it would mellow them just
enough to win. He was apparently unaware that a test for detomidine (still
a relatively new drug) had been developed, as all winners are drug tested.
The small amount of detomidine was, however, sufficient to cause the males
to drop, as many tranquilized horses will. so rather than have the horse
"advertise" the fact that he'd been sedated, the trainer had the ingenious
idea to throw in a couple of stay sutures.
I don't believe the sewing was ever proven or simply alleged. the trainer
*was* nailed for the drugs on one horse, and reputedly pled out on that
one, as the other drugged horse belonged to a client who was unaware that
his horse was being drugged.
