yeah - and how about the liquid
cocaine the the eyes to give them that large, glossy look; or the numbed tails
in the western classes (like, WHAT ARAB OWNER wouldn't know how the tail SHOULD
appear???); or maybe the latest abuse not SEEN by me but by a close friend -
sewing the stallion's sheath closed for the class so as not to allow him to
drop, thus causing an embarrassing moment for the owner, trainer, who
again?? And people say endurance is cruel? Right!
This is a bit hard for me to believe.
Maybe I am naive but why on earth would someone risk carrying around cocaine,
liquid or powder? And what vets are performing this suturing of the sheaths? Are
they doing it without drugs? That in itself is a big risk. And how come the
judges can't see this?In all the halter classes I have ever watched, the judge
looks at everything, especially the breeding parts.
I know that lack of ethics plays way to big of a
role in the show ring. I know that cosmetic surgery has been introduced and can
be hard to spot. But someone has to heat up the cocaine, and the vet (or
someone) has to be taking stitches out very soon after the class. Are there that
many blind weenies who don't know how to open their mouths at these shows? Why
didn't your friend speak up? Why would anyone in their right mind hesitate to
loudly protest this? It is just as cruel to watch and say nothing as it is to be
an active part of it.
I wonder why the show stewards don't set up a task
force to walk the show grounds unobtrusively, maybe take a few pictures and
report their findings if things are this bad. Oh, I know, it would be bad
for publicity.
How about some on you on ridecamp taking on the job?
Some of you have NO PROBLEM telling other people what to do, how to do it
and what will happen if they don't! :)
Seriously, this will never stop until someone screams,
"STOP! NO MORE!!". Don't watch and then tell people who can't do anything about
it. Tell someone who can.
Endurance people are as a whole, are very diligent in
their competition protocol. We can certainly teach by example in all other
venues of equine competition. And I would certainly hope that any vet who has
knowledge of another vet practicing cruel and unethical treatments would at
least give a good slap up side the head if not turn them in.
