This is pretty funny. Evidently we have a lot of closet
carbo product users out there. No one else will fess up huh?
If you load with carbo's you start a number of days out and
administer them multiple times a day up to and including the morning of the
ride. Then you continue to administer the carbs during and after the
ride.
If you supplement you wait usually until the first hold and
begin to administer the carbs. Like I said before once you start and you
are working the horse you need to administer them every hour or so. It all
depends on your horse. That is why you have to experiment at home.
My horses were too wired if I gave it to them the morning of the ride. I
mix it right in their slurries at the holds and they suck it down. I take
on trail for those loops that are longer than 1 1/2 hours. I find it makes
my horses eat better in the holds. When I give it to them post race they
also eat better and recover from the race quicker. There are a lot of
different theories out there. Read everything you can and make your own
decision based on what you and your horse need.
I gave some serious thought to the fat/carbo thing and here is
my opinion and it is just that. When weight lifters want to put on muscle
they eat higher than normal protein/fat diets. When marathon runners eat
the night before a race and during a race they eat carbs. It has been
working for them for a long time. There is lots of research there.
We do not have the research just some one or two rat studies not in controlled
situations. I feed my horses for what I am doing with them at that
particular point in their career.
