This probably has no relevance to an endurance horse unless it's being
pretty aggressively treated by the ride vet, but horses will also start to
yawn if their serum potassium levels are too high. If you're giving a horse
potassium penicillin IV, it has to be given slowly so as not to overload the
system with too much potassium. Looking for muscle fasciculations and
yawning is how you know you're not infusing the K Pen too fast.
And because I know how all your paranoid little brains work---NO, I don't
think the yawning you're all describing has anything to do with too much or
too little electrolyting. :-)))
