keeping my horse up all night here?<
My first 100 was the Old Dominion (I dare not tell the year! :-). The horses
(and riders) indeed perk up when the heat of the day is past and they know they
are homeward bound. I'll never forget riding Rushcreek Ingrid through the dark
forests at a brisk trot, awed that she never put a foot wrong. I was fortunate
to be able to follow Winkie Mackay-Smith on her gray (white) horse, Jamie, over
Sherman's, across McCoy's Ford and down the last 12 miles to a fifth place
finish. A gray horse in the moonlight is even better than a glowstick. :-) And
I'll never forget the haunting sounds of whipporwills near dusk, riding into
Pickett Springs (Bear Wallow).
