My farrier (one of the good ones!  And yeah, I treat him like gold ... ) 
calls this "The Oklahoma Show Job."  That is, nail on a shoe and rasp the 
hoof to fit it.  He doesn't do those, btw ... even on request (and he's 
gotten requests!  That's the scary part ...).
