I don't think its about saving the rider a completion. I think the early
vet checks are a good idea because it might save someone from having a sick
horse. Why wait til 25 or 30 miles to see that your horse isn't recovering
as well as he aughta be when you can see at a 9 mile pulse and go that the
horse isn't going to be able to keep up with the front runners....
Of course, I don't ride very fast or race. In fact, I usually come in
closer to dead last. I figure that if there is no way you could be going
any slower, then you don't have to wonder if you're going too fast <bg>
