With the average age of endurance riders being in the mid-40's, a lot of the
folks who are riding the major miles already have their families raised. A
fair number of the younger ones (and some of us older ones) don't have kids.
And in many other cases, the entire family is riding. No one is suggesting
that anyone neglect a family for anything, but I'd suggest that in any
event, that is a personal choice and a matter of setting personal
priorities. Furthermore, NOTHING we do out here is compensated by the price
or quality of the award--it is the satisfaction of the accomplishment that
makes it "worth it." And to many of us, the accomplishment of being able to
keep a horse sound and healthy for lots and lots of miles carries even more
meaning than the big wins. Meanwhile, there IS life after children, or so
those who have raised them tell me--and it seems that that's when many
endurance riders become mileage riders....
