I have to agree with Angie. Way way back when, I did one sub-9 100. We had
SEVEN stops, and three of those were hour holds. I've vetted a heckuva lot
of sub-10 hundreds, with VERY few problems, and virtually all of them had 6
to 7 holds, with at least three being at least 45 minutes in duration. Just
taking a pause, refueling, rehydrating, etc. seems to make all the
difference in the world. It also gives the ride vets more opportunities to
get hands on the horses to assess them, so that horses are slowed down or
stopped BEFORE the problems develop.
I'd also add that while a long loop may be fine in the beginning, the
29-mile loop toward the end of the WEG seems scary to me. I like to see the
loops or legs get somewhat shorter as the ride progresses and fatigue starts
to mount.
