Actually if you lean back on the down hills you are
weighting your horses hind end and he cannot bring himself under to balance
(whole bunch more problems) Even bare back you should be keeping your
center of balance over the horses center of balance. Body slightly
forward, butt off his back, brace on the neck if need be. To make your
legs stronger just practice posting with out stirups (or even
bareback) I learned to not only ride bareback but jump
bareback. You certainly don't lean back and expect your horse to
land properly over a jump.
