RE: [RC] Early Signs of WNV - Dolores Arste
Years ago, when Parvo first hit the dog world, it was a major challenge to
puppies with many deaths. Ft Dodge came out first with a recommendation to
vaccinate with Cat Parvo and then they developed a killed vaccine. Now, of
course, we have a live and very effective vaccine.
Having been one of the kennels very hard hit. Schipperkes are very
susceptible at about 5 weeks when they are really small and not able to
fight well we learned a lot of things.
The first is that any vaccine was better than none. We had an almost 100%
death rate before the vaccine.
And, second, there is no harm in vaccinating with killed vaccine even in the
face of the virus. A killed virus does not create virus. There is some
anecdotal evidence that says if you vaccinate with a killed virus in the
face of a challenge you trick the body into thinking it is sicker than it
really is and cause it to fight harder. Again, this is only anecdotal
evidence, but we did in vaccinate with a booster even in the face of an
active onslaught which saved a good 50% of our puppies.
