One of the worst times we got lost (practically everyone in the ride)
the markers were tied around the trunk of the tree. VERY obvious at
the time of day they did it I'm sure, but when we came by the sun was
directly behind it and that tree was just a black outline.
A bit of advice on the red plates. Make sure you put them at least 10
yards or so after the missed turn. If you put it up at the same time as
the turn marker you've defeated your purpose. We've gotten so used to
marking with pie plates that it doesn't seem harder. We used to tie 3
markers staggered before the turn...and a couple on through the turn.
Now we just take a carpet staple gun and staple the pie plate to the
tree. We make our arrows out of duct tape (on styrofoam plates), then staple through them
and they stay up better. I remember when we gave
a bag of them to one person headed out to mark and she asked how many
right turns and how many left turn arrows did you give me? >g<
As long as we're discussing trail marking...I LOVE a marker designating
the half way mark on a loop. That lets me look at my watch and
calculate exactly when I'll get back to the vet check if I maintain my
pace. That's better than mileage markers by far. I don't really care
for those. They make me feel like a kid is in the backseat saying, "how
many miles have we been...how many more to go?"
