[RC] Vet Vist-teeth-sheath-wnv - Roger Rittenhouse

I have a new vet. I called this vet and asked about WNV and teeth --
and yes, I asked about the guy thing. This vet is new in the area - and
does teeth, floats the correct way. That is with the speculum or what
ever the vice apparatus is that keeps the mouth open.
Her policy is to tranquilize the horse and get the job done right.

I never had a vet or horse dentist do this 'right' before.

I had 6 to check teeth, including the 4 boys to check and WNV for 7.
Seems it is very easy to do the teeth and the sheath at the same time
since the horse is tranquilized and will drop without a problem.

Vet arrives on time. (Howard take note) Out of the truck steps this
very petite little lady, say- 28 and 105lbs and 5-1 and blond hair and blue eyes. I
was taken back a bit, Now how was she going to work all these horses, she
brings her DAD. - Note to Howard - NO you cannot have my vet. Not only
is she very cute but she knows her stuff.

We brought out the OLD gelding first. She tranquilized him and gave me a
stern lecture about talking or touching horses that are tranquilized.
Seems this causes the horse to not 'go under' and can create a monster.
SO NO touch the horse. This gelding is 30 yrs old NEVER had the sheath
cleaned. Did that first- only a very small bean and no real mess, go
    figure?
Teeth another issue. Seems we were never able to get this guy to let
anyone do his teeth, so he had bad teeth-of course. Most are gone and
those left are in bad shape. So she did a slight cleanup and left them
    alone.
We then discussed his feeding. She really likes the OLD horse pellet
feed, IF you mix with BP AND lots of water, to make a mush. His teeth
are so bad he really cannot process normal grains. We adjusted his
feeding program. We also have the person who feeds our dog feed him
when we are gone. I mixed up the ration in large bags. This horse is
    the Alfa horse and will
come to his place when called, so no one gets his grain.
He has to be fed every day at least once.
Here is what we feed once per day.
    Coffee can 1-lb measure
    2-BP dry
2- chop hay- bagged dengie or Triple Crown
    4- Triple Crown Senior Feed
16 oz fat - oil cocoasoya or corn-flax blend - cold pressed.
OR 16 oz -one coffee can Equi-Jewel rice bran
1-2 oz carbo supplement- using Uckele Carbo-Load
    4 Oz ABC Plus
    Daily wormer
Add water to cover mix - soak - add more water to make a soup-mush.

After two weeks he is putting on weight. I may feed BP-HAY-mix a second
time. He does appear to do ok with grass, but not with regular hay. He
does OK with alfalfa hay - leafs.

Other boys. 28 yr old gelding no bean - ok teeth, 13yr small bean
great teeth, 11yr good teeth but big bean and real messy- of course this one is mine.
I knew something was wrong with him, peed all over the place as in
    spray.
Sure was easy doing this project with a vet and drugs.

24yr mare good teeth. - 20 yr mare good teeth, but now has a bad case of melanoma,
all over the place. Not sure she will be around too much longer.

While this sure cost me a pile, all the horses have properly floated
and cleaned teeth and the boys are good. So it may be worth the costs
to have the teeth and sheath done at the same time. This vet really
has a problem with the 'horse dentist'. She showed me what the
problems were with all my horses and the lack of real professional
teeth care. I had a 'dentist' do them a number of time as well as
other 'man-handling' or horse-handling vets. All they do is 'strong arm' them and the job is
    never done right.

So everyone is good until next year.
