From 1994ish to 1997, I had a standard, two horse
steel trailer and a V6 two wheel standard transmission Ranger. I drove
that puppy all over Texas - well, within 5-6 hours of Dallas, anyway. I
had two 15 hand Arabs in it - about 1800 pounds, since Tasha was chunky (as the
Old Glory vet dictated to his note taker . . . "Put down that she's got extra
condition. No,she's postiviely obese!" She did finish that 35
miler.) I was pulling them on mostly flat land, no mountains, just some
long hills. I used the same set up to haul a horse down to Texas from
Michigan, then another one back, then the first one back home to Michigan.
Again, I was mostly driving up the Mississippi river valley, and it was only one
horse, but I had no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't have taken it anywhere
near mountains, though, mainly because I didn't have electric brakes on the
trailer! I guess if you don't have the second horse to haul yet, and
you're getting a Brenderup, I don't know if I'd be in a big hurry to switch to a
gas guzzler. My Ranger got around 20 miles a gallon unloaded. My
F250 diesel gets about 13 with a tailwind. With a load, the Ranger got
about 13 and the diesel gets about 12. Good
luck!
