Re: [RC] sheath cleaning - EBraznell
I have trained my horse to drop on command when I put my hand on his sheath
and say, alluringly, "Drop, Dukie, drop." I trained him to do this by
offering him a treat when he dropped the slightest bit. Other horses may
respond to rubbing their navel.
For cleaning, I put a hose, on low, into his sheath, and let it flow. It
softens the smegma really well. Then, if he's really bad, I use Excalibur,
but I love the idea of the KY jelly. He usually does not drop for the hose
part.
After I've done that part, we go to his stall, where the lights are low, and
he relaxes. He then will drop his penis all the way on command. The
softened smegma comes off easily then. I don't use rubber gloves; but
Excalibur cleans hands, too. And he is a smegma monster! I do this every
week, and will find a bean about 50% of the time!
A lot of people in my (very large) boarding barn think this is sexual. I
don't believe horses think that way, and I certainly don't. To them, it's
just a good scratch!
It is a very trusting thing for a horse to do. But people with mares,
especially, say, "Oh, that's so gross! That's why I don't have a gelding!"
Then I tell them they need to clean between their mares' teats, and they go
running for the vet to do it.
Hey, it saves me a couple of hundred dollars in vet bills each year!
